When the pope throws his zucchetto into the ring on a debate, that’s usually a good indicator you’re looking at a controversial topic.

Take, for example, whether it’s justifiable that a CEO should receive a pay deal worth $1 trillion (£760bn).

Enter stage left Elon Musk, who just had a record-breaking pay deal approved by shareholders.

In the build-up to the vote, Pope Leo XIV referenced Tesla’s compensation plans as he spoke about the “continuously wider gap between the income levels of the working class and the money that the wealthiest receive.”
