In elite sport, there’s a long history of turning a blind eye when big names step out of line. Bad behaviour gets waved away as ‘passion’. Staff are expected to tolerate it. And reputations, not rules, often dictate who gets held accountable.
That’s what makes Wimbledon’s recent run of player fines genuinely worth talking about.
Twelve players have been sanctioned this year for abusing staff or unsportsmanlike conduct, with the biggest fine – £9,000 – handed to defending doubles champion Henry Patten after he reportedly shouted at staff trying to cut his practice short. Other players, including Adrian Mannarino and Elena Pridankina, were fined thousands for conduct ranging from racket abuse to audible obscenities.
These aren’t just symbolic gestures, but a clear signal that the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) is prepared to back its people, even when that means calling out the behaviour of the very stars who bring in the crowds.
