The number of entry-level jobs in the UK has dropped sharply since the commercial launch of ChatGPT almost three years ago, even as overall vacancies and salaries continue to climb, new figures show.
According to the latest UK Job Market Report from job matching platform Adzuna, entry-level roles (which include graduate jobs, apprenticeships, internships and junior positions) have fallen by nearly a third (-31.89%) since ChatGPT’s breakthrough in November 2022. These jobs now make up just 25% of all UK postings, down from 28.9% in November 2022 and the lowest proportion seen since that point.
Graduate hiring is also feeling the squeeze. Advertised graduate vacancies dipped a further -4.2% in May, placing them -28.4% lower than a year ago and at their lowest level since July 2020.
The figures come at a time when major firms such as the 'Big Four' accountacy giants - PwC, Deloitte, KPMG and EY - are slashing graduate intake numbers in favour of automating tasks typically fulfilled by junior recruits.
