Burberry will cut around 1,700 jobs over the next two years, in a sweeping cost-cutting drive aimed at reviving the British luxury brand's fortunes.
The cuts - roughly a fifth of its global workforce - will primarily affect office-based roles, with the company also planning to scrap the night shift at its Castleford factory in West Yorkshire, where its signature trench coats are produced.
CEO Joshua Schulman said the move was necessary to address “overproduction” and preserve Burberry’s UK manufacturing base.
The restructuring forms part of Schulman’s wider turnaround strategy, which includes a renewed focus on marketing British heritage and increasing sales of trench coats and scarves; core products that lost traction following pricing missteps and a broader downturn in luxury demand.
