A "groundbreaking" new report has shed light on the concerning impact that AI and automation have on the UK labour market.
The research, led by Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Christopher Pissarides for the Institute for the Future of Work, highlights how technological disruption is exacerbating existing inequalities while also creating new ones across socio-economic groups, geographic regions, and industries.
The Pissarides Review into the Future of Work and Wellbeing, challenges long-standing assumptions about the trajectory of automation, arguing that its consequences extend far beyond simple job displacement.
Instead, workers are experiencing a complex mix of automation-driven changes, which can either enhance job quality or lead to greater job insecurity. Without intervention, the report warns that automation could deepen regional economic divides and further entrench disparities in employment opportunities and wages.
