Meet the UK beauty salons teaching staff how to talk to customers about cervical cancer

Staff at Yorkshire hair and beauty salons are being trained by their employers on how to discuss cervical cancer with customers.

The scheme comes as part of wider efforts by the Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance to improve low testing rates.

The Cancer Alliance is offering the courses for free, helping employees at companies like York House Beauty Clinic and Louise’s Beauty Retreat to develop skills they need to talk about cervical cancer symptoms.

What is included in the cervical cancer awareness training?

Staff will also be coached on explaining how the smear test works. According to a blog post on the Alliance’s website, the training programs can help salons and their staff “break down the barriers that may stop one of their customers from booking a screening appointment.”
