It’s that time of year, again.
Mariah Carey has defrosted; people are inexplicably playing ‘Whamageddon’ even though 1. It’s an amazing Christmas song and 2. Wham! donated all royalties for the single to charity; and social media platforms are swamped with ‘Spotify Wrapped’ posts.
The glitzy platform feature has achieved immense popularity across the globe in recent years, giving users a look at their top artists, songs, and podcasts for the year through a customised series of graphics that are immediately sharable to friends, family, and followers. According to Spotify, over 100 million users access their Spotify Wrapped each year.
But while its recent popularity has sparked copycat year-end recap features from the likes of Apple Music, Duolingo, TikTok, Aldi, and PlayStation, Spotify's famous feature took a while to reach cult status.
