The BBC’s recent commitment to reviewing and improving its workplace culture, following numerous controversies involving high-profile employees, was the latest chapter of an ongoing saga within the organisation.
While the BBC has engaged Change Associates, a consultancy well-versed in cultural and behavioural issues, for this latest review, the recurrence of scandals - from Huw Edwards’ criminal charges to allegations of bullying on Strictly Come Dancing - raises questions about the effectiveness of previous reforms.
In 2013, the BBC underwent a “Respect at Work” review aimed at addressing similar concerns. Yet, the current situation suggests that either the recommendations from that time weren’t fully implemented or failed to bring lasting change.
This renewed probe, intended to further enforce the broadcaster’s values and manage the imbalanced power dynamics, is ambitious. And given that familiar issues continue to arise, many employees may struggle to regain trust in BBC leadership’s ability to provide a safe, respectful environment.
