Balancing act | Do the risks of return-to-office mandates outweigh the benefits?

Do the risks of return-to-office mandates outweigh the benefits?

As businesses continue to navigate the post-pandemic landscape, an increasing number of UK companies are implementing return-to-office mandates, often requiring employees to spend a set number of days on-site while reducing the flexibility of working from home.

Santander, Manchester United, and PwC are among the big names recently taking this approach, with the latter going as far as tracking the working locations of its UK employees.

While many business leaders argue that office-based working enhances productivity and collaboration, others view these mandates as a restrictive move that could backfire.

Advocates for the return to office argue that physical presence fosters better communication, creativity, and camaraderie. It’s much easier to bounce ideas off a colleague in person or to engage in spontaneous discussions that spark innovation when everyone is in the same room.
