Talk about it | TV presenters' response to colleague's on-air panic attack proves a need for mental health dialogue at work

TV presenters' response to colleague's on-air panic attack proves a need for mental health dialogue at work

The recent on-air panic attack experienced by Nate Byrne, a weather presenter for ABC News Breakfast, has brought much-needed attention to mental health in the workplace.

During a live broadcast, Byrne courageously admitted he was experiencing a panic attack and handed the segment back to his co-hosts, Lisa Millar and Michael Rowland. This moment of vulnerability not only highlighted Byrne's bravery but also underscored the supportive environment cultivated by his colleagues, who responded with empathy and professionalism.

Byrne’s transparency about his struggles with anxiety is especially commendable in a public-facing role where maintaining a composed image is often paramount. His willingness to acknowledge his mental health struggle in real-time is a powerful reminder of the importance of normalising these conversations at work. And, as someone who once suffered a panic attack moments before being due to host a live webinar (and was too stubborn to admit it), it’s something this author can also learn from.

For UK workplaces, where mental health remains a significant concern, this offers valuable lessons on fostering a culture that prioritises mental wellbeing.
