'Condolence money' | Employee refuses to give money to bereaved colleague after not receiving any themselves

An employee has shared a story on Reddit of how they refused to contribute to a colleague’s ‘condolence money’ when a member of their family had passed away.

In the post, the worker explains how they refused to give money to a co-worker's fund after the same act was not given to them when their grandmother passed away because they couldn’t provide a death certificate.

“I told the HR about my grandmother’s death and was told that a death certificate was required for approval for compassionate leaves, so I took annual leave instead to mourn my grandmother at home with my family.”

“It just did not hit me well, so this time I refused to offer any money. When the HR asked why, I told them how unfair I felt when it’s always me paying for others and nobody pays my family anything when my grandmother passed,” said the post.
