White collar workers converse differently because of DEI programmes

According to new research, workplace DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) initiatives and programmes have led to a shift in white collar workers communicating differently with one another.

Researchers found that since the mid-90s, people with ‘middle-class’ jobs were more likely to have adopted ‘resonance’ in the way they speak, imitating the language of their peers into their own speech.

This transition was largely attributed to the rise of DEI programmes, where staff in organisations learn about challenging their own prejudice, questioning their own unconscious biases, and learning about inclusivity.

Interestingly, the report revealed there had been minimal to no change amongst ‘working class’ professions in the way these employees communicate.
