Worker made redundant accused firm of using furlough illegally

An accountant alleged that he was made redundant after raising concerns about his boss’ misuse of the furlough scheme.

As reported by Yorkshire Live, Chris Highe was awarded an undisclosed five figure sum after being let go from his role with Crowthers Accountants, where he had worked for 15 years and was reportedly the firm’s longest serving member of staff.

The court heard that the firm’s founder, Steve Crowther, began to look at cost cutting measures amid fears about how the then-unfolding Covid pandemic would impact the company's finances.

An employment tribunal ruled the dismissal as unfair, with a judge reportedly saying that Highe “had a target on his back”.
