Backlash from experts | Gov's temporary visa plan 'won't solve' talent crisis

The Government have confirmed plans to roll out temporary visas to workers, in a bid to solve the UK’s current labour and import crisis. However, the move has been criticised as ‘ineffective’ by industry experts.

Following widespread shortages across the nation in sectors such as haulage and goods importing, the UK Government this week announced a three-month scheme, ending on Christmas Eve, which would make it easier for overseas HGV drivers to work in the UK.

It is understood about 5,000 visas may be issued in a bid to quell the current issues which have led to short supplies on supermarket shelves and, more recently, dry pumps at petrol stations, according to reports published by the BBC.

The decision comes amid figures from the Road Haulage Association recently estimated a shortage of around 100,000 HGV drivers in the UK.
