The Royal family is currently reviewing the prospect of appointing a ‘diversity tsar’, following allegations of racism within the British institution, a report from The Guardian stated.
The allegations, which arose in the recent interview between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and media personality Oprah Winfrey, claimed that an anonymous member of the Royal household made a racist comment about the couple’s first child, Archie.
The Duke and Duchess revealed in the controversial interview that an individual within the family questioned the pair over the ‘darkness’ of Archie’s skin – the pair later clarified that neither the Queen nor the Duke of Edinburgh were responsible for the comment.
Initiatives designed to improve diversity and inclusion within Buckingham Palace were already underway before the interview took place, the major step of appointing a diversity tsar is reportedly a conscious response to the allegations – and marks part of an attempt to modernise the Royal household’s culture.
