Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has announced that it will increase salaries for staff at its supermarkets and Argos shops, and also pay a bonus to frontline staff – the third since the pandemic hit – Retail Gazette reported.
The wage increase will see the average worker’s wages grow from £9.30 an hour – and £9 for those working in Argos locations – to £9.50 an hour as of March.
Additional benefits are being given to those working in stores within central London, who will see their pay rise to £10.10 an hour, and frontline workers, who will receive a three per cent annual bonus.
The announcement marks the third bonus offered to staff since the pandemic began, likely due to the strong sales that many supermarkets have seen whilst other retailers have been closed. For Sainsbury’s, this has meant handing out over £100million in additional pay to staff.
A ten per cent pay boost was offered to staff between March and April last year, with a second ten per cent boost announced in November.
“In the last 12 months our frontline colleagues have shown outstanding commitment to our customers,” Sainsbury’s Retail Director Clodagh Moriarty told Retail Gazette.
