In a national address yesterday, Home Secretary Priti Patel set out the nation’s post-Brexit points-based immigration system, with freedom of movement set to end for EU residents this coming January.
In her televised statement, Patel implored employers to invest in prospective workers from within the UK, but added that the new system would allow UK industries to “attract the best and brightest from around the world” - BBC reported.
Under the new post-Brexit system, EU migrants will be subject to the same requirements as those from other parts of the world, with a points-based system highlighting different factors such as key skills and language when allocating visas that allow work within the UK.
However, the news has not passed without attracting significant criticism from numerous bodies and companies, with the GMB union representing staff within the NHS calling the new rules an ‘absolute shambles’.
