Which UK cities had the biggest job booms in May?

Despite the unknown lasting impact of the coronavirus pandemic, employer confidence started to pick back up in May as lockdown restrictions eased, with job vacancies rising by 5.9% month-on-month across the UK, new data from jobs board CV-Library has found.

The data assessed the UK jobs market throughout May and compared it with figures from the previous month and year to build an understanding of how the labour market is fairing right now. The data was then broken down by areas to ascertain where in the UK recruitment is the strongest:

  1. Leicester +27.6%

  2. Sheffield +26.4%

  3. Hull +19.7%

  4. Liverpool +12.4%

  5. Manchester +9.3%

  6. Edinburgh +8.2%

  7. Birmingham +5.8%

  8. Leeds +5.3%

  9. London +3.6%

  10. Newcastle +2.6%

Which industries are bouncing back?

Whilst the news has been awash with reports of redundancies across many industries including travel and automotive, it seems that the latter is also in a period of increased hiring, having jumped by 176.8%. The leisure and tourism market is also regaining strength quickly, rising by 43.4%.

Whilst the recruitment industry has had to adapt to the challenges of virtual working, it too has grown by 42.3% whilst distribution and marketing have grown by 33.8% and 32.1% respectively.

However, despite these reassuring figures, it is important to note that when looking at year-on-year data, overall job numbers were down by 67.9%. What’s more, none of the locations or industries monitored in the report saw a rise in jobs year-on-year.

Yet, Lee Biggins, Founder and CEO of CV-Library, said that the future looks promising. “As lockdown restrictions begin to ease, the market is starting to show signs of recovery and it’s promising to see job numbers picking back up across the country; particularly in sectors that we know have been suffering,” he explained.
