What your morning coffee really does to you

People living in the UK consume 70million cups of coffee every day. When this was categorised by gender, the average British male coffee drinker consumes 13 cups per week, which compared to 11 cups for the average female coffee drinker. So, the stats are indicative of how much the UK loves to drink coffee.

Usually, caffeine is consumed by people to increase alertness and brain function, particularly when individuals need to be able to concentrate when driving long distances or when staying up late to complete a work project. But what benefits can it have on productivity in the workplace?  

Fast Company reported that, while caffeine doesn’t improve creativity, it can significantly enhance an individual’s ability to problem-solve which can help employees with thinking outside the box. These were the findings published in a new study published in the journal Consciousness and Cognition.

The study investigated 80 participants who either consumed a placebo or 200 mg of caffeine and then tracked problem-solving abilities, creative idea generation and mood. The results found that while problem-solving spiked, memory or creativity didn’t improve on the back of drinking caffeine.
