Worker fired for 'not engaging in football chat'

A number of reasons may contribute to someone being removed from their position at work, such as misconduct, poor performance or consistently turning up late to work.

One worker, however, has revealed that she was fired from her role for a different reason entirely. According to the Daily Mail, a sales director of an FTSE 100 company claimed that she was sacked because she chose not to discuss football and go out drinking ‘with the lads’.

Adrienne Liebenberg, who joined DS Smith in March 2017 as Director of Global Sales, Marketing and Innovation where she was earning a six-figure salary, was fired in December 2018 over claims her leadership styles was ‘dictatorial’ and that she wasn’t ‘collegial’ with her co-workers.

However, Liebenberg has taken her case to the Central London Employment Tribunal stating she was removed because major business decisions were made over ‘boozy dinners’ that she didn’t want to be a part of.
