1 in 5 workers befriend their boss to get ahead

When deciding which professionals deserve to receive a promotion, many factors such as work ethic, intelligence, quality of work and people-management skills are integral elements for managers to consider.

However, according to a new study by office outfitting company Furniture At Work, 43% of the UK workforce believes that becoming ‘buddies’ with management helps in gaining a promotion.

The survey, which polled over 2,000 UK-based office workers discovered a number of revelatory trends in the workplace, the most notable of which is that they believe befriending the boss will help them climb the career ladder. This was a particularly strong trend amongst younger generations, over half of whom (52%) agreed, along with 48% of Generation Z workers, that being close with the boss raised their position. This is compared to just 30% of Baby Boomers.

However, whilst most are striving to be friends with the boss, the survey also revealed that professionals are struggling to make connections with others in their workplace; 26% of respondents said they find it hard to make friends at work, whilst 23% said that their social anxieties were stopping them from socialising with colleagues.
