As the bells rang in the New Year, many professionals celebrated the end of another decade and allowed themselves to have a few drinks. Some, however, will have taken part in the age-old tradition of starting January with a dreadful hangover.
Whilst the more robust of Britain’s working population may have dusted themselves off and recovered in time for their first day back at work, new research from ONS has claimed that one in eight workers are still feeling the effects of their partying and will call in sick today (January 2 2020).

The data claimed that the impact on the British economy for this cultural phenomenon will total almost £5billion, but the ONS said that the trend has been prevalent on UK shores for the last 16 years.
So, the question that HR will find itself asking is, are we being pessimistic in assuming that this absence is due to boozing? Given that Winter has a detrimental effect on the health of workers, are these one in eight actually ill?
