It might only be November but for some, Christmas begins as soon as John Lewis’ annual festive advert hits UK screens – this year featuring Edgar the excitable dragon.
Whilst 2018’s commercial re-told the story of Sir Elton John - charting his evolution from the reception of his first piano to eventual superstardom - this year viewers follow the trials and tribulations of a wide-eyed young dragon as he fumbles his way around a very Christmassy town.
Viewers watch as this pocket-sized pyro undeliberately melts part of an ice-skating rink and sets fire to the community’s centrepiece Christmas tree. For the advert’s green-scaled protagonist, it leads to a feeling of ostracisation and, heartbreakingly, sadness.
However, the advert ends on a high note – not least because of the efforts and strategic thinking of one flame-haired young girl – as Edgar is brought back into the community and allowed to put his talents to seasonal good use.
