Employee fired after demanding justice for dead colleague

There are a number of factors that may contribute to an employee’s dismissal. This could be because they are a continuous underperformer and routinely fail to meet deadlines, they show signs of toxicity or go against company policy. All of these reasons are sufficient grounds for letting an employee go.

However, when it comes to speaking out about an incident that took place in the workplace, should HR get involved and take action? Of course, if an employee is spouting workplace secrets without hesitation, HR has a duty to step in, but when an employee speaks out about a colleague’s suicide, should that employee face dismissal?

One Facebook worker has allegedly faced the brunt of this. A software engineer at the global social media firm told CNBC that he faced the chop for speaking out about his colleague’s suicide last month.

Yi Yin joined Facebook’s core growth team in July 2019 and was fired after he participated in a protest demanding justice for the staff member Qin Chen – an employee who took their own life at Facebook’s HQ on September 19, 2019.
