Employers can make employees redundant if they are no longer needed for their job.
This may be because the business model is changing, the firm’s processes are changing due to the up rise of technology or automation, or because the business is relocating. While this is in some cases a necessity for employers, it isn’t a nice experience for employees who are on the receiving end.
To help employees feel more supported and comfortable during their redundancy discussion, employees may be allowed to bring in a person to the meeting for support or to take notes. Yet, one employee facing the boot brought someone along for support that has since raised a few eyebrows.
A company executive facing the chop brought a clown to his official redundancy meeting at Auckland firm FCB after HR encouraged him to bring a "support person" – The Sun reported.
