Employee sacked after 'pulling sickie' to go on TV

Employers are not oblivious to their employees pulling a sickie once in a while, but this doesn’t mean that it should be tolerated.

A World Cup-winning footballer Adil Rami has been given the boot after flouting training sessions to appear on a mud wrestling reality TV show – The Sun reported.

After telling club bosses that he was injured and this was preventing him from training, he appeared on the game show Fort Boyard, reports have claimed, which undoubtedly caught the eye of his boss. He was initially suspended from his position though reports have since claimed that this escalated into a dismissal.

Edward Wheen, Partner at Hewitsons LLP, exclusively told HR Grapevine that an employee pulling a sickie may well constitute to gross misconduct and immediate dismissal.
