Underpay | MasterChef judge fined for underpaying staff by £6million

MasterChef Australia judge and celebrity chef George Calombaris has underpaid his restaurant employees by almost £6million ($8million) collectively – 7 News reported.

Both Calombaris and his Made Establishment company have been fined £160,250 ($200,000) by The Fair Work Ombudsman – an independent statutory agency of the Australian Government.

7 News reported that the firm has been made to back-pay employees more than £6.27million ($7.83million) to 515 current or former employees working at the Press Club, Hellenic Republic or Gazi between 2011 and 2017. Back-payments were also made to nine employees working at Jimmy Grants.

Fair Work Ombudsman Sandra Parker explained: "Made's massive back-payment bill should serve as a warning to all employers that if they don’t get workplace compliance right from the beginning, they can spend years cleaning up the mess.”
