Throughout history, the concept of a ‘boss’ has struck fear in the hearts of workers, yet the Dickensian image of a cigar smoking, whip-yielding boss with the power to toss you out onto the street for little to no reason simply doesn’t exist anymore.

Most notably, this includes being spoken to a lot more honestly about the company and worker rights. For example, after American brand Wayfair refused to stop doing business with migrant detention centres, CEO Niraj Shah was forced to concede to the open criticism of her employees.
