Workers forced to shell out for fleeing customers

It was revealed this week that Mexican restaurant chain Wahaca had a historic policy, in which workers were forced to compensate the business if a customer left without paying their bill.

The chain was heavily criticised after a staff member in a North London location was asked by management to pay back £3 for every £40 spent on a bill that went unpaid. The worker was later told that would no longer be held to the policy after a customer raised the issue and complained about mistreatment.

“Hi @Wahaca just eaten at your Kentish Town restaurant for the last time,” tweeted former Labour Leader of Camden council, Sarah Hayward.

“Ppl next to us left without paying and their server is made to foot the bill from his wages. Apparently company policy."
