Are you worth more? Have you worked your hardest and has it shown? If the answers yes, chances are you’re feeling like you deserve a pay-rise.
Asking for a raise in your wage is an uncomfortable topic to negotiate around, especially if you aren’t successful. There are ways of approaching this daunting process and Grapevine’s collected the top five ways of getting that increase.
1. Research your role (internal and external)
The first thing you need to do when seeking a pay-rise is to understand how much you’re actually worth. You should look online at the range of roles and the salaries that align with them and at your competitors' wage range as well. Amanda Augustine, career advice expert at TopCV says “do some digging into the current market rate of the role you’re doing.” It’s essential to not undersell yourself, but also understand where the line is and how much is an amount that’s reasonable. This also requires knowing your business. Where do you work? The wage growth is dependent on the size of your company, as well as the location and the industry you’re in.
If you know the sort of salary that your colleagues are on, you may be able to use this information to make an estimate at the sort of agreeable raise you could get. If you don’t know that, see if you can find any job offers from your company online and where they are on the job ladder and this will help you outline what’s fair for you. Don’t go in blind, if you’re serious, research.
