When someone highlights discrimination in the recruitment process, most people would immediately think of the Protected Characteristics integrated within the 2010 Equality Act to determine what is and isn’t allowed.
While in the UK numerous characteristics such as age, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation are protected under this legally-binding act, New York City has decided to go a step further.
Lawmakers in the Big Apple have decided to ban discrimination against an additional human characteristic that they deem to be a crucial part of each person.
New guidelines issued by the city’s Human Rights Commission – a non-departmental public body – have prohibited race discrimination based on hair in New York City and this is said to be the first of its kind to be introduced to the nation – The Independent reports.
