Amazon was recently identified as one of the many market-leading companies to feature an all-white board of directors.
After a significant backlash from the public and increased pressure to ensure that the board features a more diverse range of directors, Amazon has appointed ex-Starbucks COO Rosalind Brewer to the role as one of only four women, and the only person of colour.
Brewer has a significant history in company management, having previously taken the position of Sam’s Club (a division of Wal-MartStores Inc) CEO, before joining Amazon in the role of Chief Operating Officer in 2017 as the second-highest ranking executive at Starbucks – coming second only to CEO Kevin Johnson.
In 2018, she was listed at number 34 on Forbes’ list of the most powerful women in business. Speaking to CNN, Brewer discussed the need for diversity in the workplace, stating:
