Amazon robot worker hospitalises colleagues in bear spray incident

Twenty-four Amazon workers were sent to hospital after a robot discharged dangerous bear spray at a warehouse in Robbinsville Township, New Jersey – CNN reports.

Employees reported having trouble breathing and burning sensations in their eyes and throats, a spokesperson for the township told CNN. In total, 54 employees were affected, with two dozen requiring hospitalisation. However, they are all expected to make a full recovery.

An internal investigation found that the cannister of spray was accidentally punctured by an automated machine. The aerosol, which contains chemicals found in chili peppers, is designed to prevent bear attacks for those who enjoy activities in their habitats.

"A damaged aerosol can dispense strong fumes in a contained area of the facility," Amazon Spokeswoman Rachael Lighty said.
