Huge payout looms in Morrisons data scandal

A hefty compensation bill could be slapped on Morrisons after the supermarket lost an appeal ruling that claimed they were responsible for a former employee leaking personal details of thousands – The Guardian reports.

This ruling could give rise to more than 5,500 affected employees seeking compensation from the supermarket.

In 2014, senior IT employee Andrew Skelton leaked personal details of 100,000 employees which revealed National Insurance (NI) numbers, date of birth, bank account details and salary information. He was consequently jailed for eight years in July 2015.

However, the Bradford-based Morrisons supermarket is set to appeal against the court of appeal ruling. They previously denied all legal liability for the incident.
