British people are expecting to have a ‘portfolio career’ of many different jobs, rather than one streamlined career, according to research from Unum and The Future Laboratory.
The survey found that almost half of UK workers (46%) expect to have multiple careers throughout their working life.
The researchers believe there could be multiple reasons behind workers taking a more flexible approach to their careers. Some people, for example, are part of the ‘sandwich generation’ - those attempting to balance raising children with caring for ageing parents. These workers may find they wish to change careers to find something more flexible that fits around their schedules.
A second group, which the researchers named Self-Fulfilled Workers, seek multiple careers and greater workplace flexibility to enable them to pursue and professional passions. Almost three-quarters of UK workers (74%) reported that they are still keen to continue learning into their older years.
