Union calls for four-day working week after technology boom

New technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation and robotics could pave the way for higher pay and reduced workloads, a new TUC report has found.

The Government and businesses have estimated that new technologies could boost UK GDP by at least £200billion in the next decade – freeing up workers’ time and making four-day working weeks a realistic outcome.

Despite the Union promoting the benefit of technology for boosting work-life balance, more than half of UK workers express concern that the benefits of technology will be hoarded by managers and shareholders rather than shared fairly between managers, shareholders and ordinary workers (34%).

TUC General Secretary, Frances O’Grady, explains: “Workers are having a hard time. If productivity gains from new technology are even half as good as promised, then the country can afford to make working lives better.
