The construction and agricultural industries saw the greatest number of workplace fatalities in 2017/18, according to research from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The construction industry came out on top, where 38% of reported fatalities occurred, with agriculture industry at 29% and the manufacturing industry at 15%.
In 2017/18, 35 fatal injuries to workers were caused by falling from a height, 26 fatal injuries caused by being struck by a moving vehicle and 31 fatal injuries attributed to ‘other kind of accident’ category, which includes injuries including those cased by animals, drowning and exposure to fire.

The fatal injuries to workers were also categorised by age. Research revealed that out of the 144 workers killed in 2017/18, 86 of those killed were between the ages of 16-59 and 55 were aged 60 and over.
