Met Chief Inspector wins 6-figure sum after sexist female boss drove him out

A Met Police Chief Inspector has been awarded £870,000 after a tribunal ruled that he lost his job as a result of direct sex discrimination.

Officer Adrian Denby, 49, ran a tactical unit at Paddington, most commonly known as the riot squad. However, he was driven out of his job in October 2014, after Met Deputy Assistant Commissioner Maxine de Brunner challenged the squads perceived ‘macho’ culture.

Denby claimed that a female colleague in a similar position to him was treated differently during the investigations, which were launched by Brunner after she saw a police officer wearing just a towel around his waist in the office as he left the shower room.

Brunner also claimed that Denby’s unit was operating an off-licence from inside the police station, after she found beer in the fridge alongside a price list. The investigation also looked at alleged malpractice by officers in Denby’s unit, such as fiddling overtime hours.
