18% of cancer patients face discrimination on return to work

Almost one in five of those diagnosed with cancer will face discrimination from employers or colleagues when they return to work.

A recent survey by Macmillan has found that 18% of those who are diagnosed face discriminatory behaviour on their return to the workplace – the BBC reports.

The survey, which questions 1,009 patients who were all in work when they were first diagnosed, found that 15% of staff returned to work before feeling ready. 14% diagnosed either give up their job or are made redundant as a result of their illness.

Liz Egan, of Macmillan, told the BBC: "It's appalling... so many employers are not offering the right support."
