Every recruiter wants to find the next best channel for top talent. Whether it’s trialling a specialist job board, harvesting an online database, or trawling the latest social platform- recruiters are always testing new digital channels to find the most talented candidates.

But what if we told you that you probably already know your next ideal candidate?

The 2016 Candidate Attraction Report surveyed over 600 UK recruiters, both in-house and agency-side. The results are as consistent as they are clear: for top quality candidates, look to your existing talent pool and to your colleagues and employees for referrals.

This might not come as a surprise to many in the industry. Employee referrals have frequently been regarded as a good channel for candidates. Referrals are consistently ranked highly for generating quality candidates.

Quality over Quantity

However, it’s not all good news for referrals. Their Achilles heel is that they fail to provide sufficient quantity of candidates. Again, this finding is consistent amongst both in-house and agency recruiters.

This begs the question: Does more need to be done to nurture employee referrals as a source of candidates? In an environment where candidate scarcity is the number 1 issue for in-house and agency teams, any improvement on the volume of candidates from a quality channel would be welcome relief.
