Uber drivers are currently waiting with baited breath to hear the results of an ongoing trial which is set to determine their employee status.
In this vein, we spoke to Kevin Charles, Director and Barrister at Crossland Employment Solicitors, who explains the significance of the trial and what either outcome would mean for those involved.
“If the employment tribunal's judgement rules in favour of the Uber drivers, so drivers will be classed as 'employees' and entitled to full employment rights, then this will have major financial implications for the business, if the decision is accepted by Uber and not appealed,” he says.
“The cost of employing the drivers will increase as employers will have to pay both the minimum wage and holiday pay amongst other extra costs. It’s also very likely that there are already a number of potential cases waiting in the wings and this decision is likely to encourage many others to come forward.
