UK businesses will not be made to reveal the names of the foreign workers on their payroll, the government has announced.
Earlier this month, Home Secretary Amber Rudd suggested that companies may be forced to list the foreign employees who work for them, in an attempt to reduce net migration and encourage British companies to employ more British staff.
Defence Secretary, Sir Michael Fallon, has now told the BBC that this “is not going to happen”, though he did admit that some firms could be asked “simply to report their numbers”.
The suggested plan caused something of a furore amongst politicians and business leaders alike, with one unnamed FTSE CEO telling The Guardian that the proposal was simply “bizarre”.
