Quiet discrimination excludes military veterans in job market

Former servicemen and women are being quietly discriminated against when entering the civilian job market, according to a report by the Royal British Legion.

The report ‘Deployment to Employment’ found that stereotypes of Armed Force veterans are hindering their chances of finding employment, The Telegraph reports.

Drawing on official statistics as well as its own research, the Legion found that working age veterans in the UK are nearly twice as likely to be unemployed (11%) as their civilian counterparts (six per cent).

The Legion also estimates that 120,000 veterans of working age in the UK are unemployed and looking for a job and 160,000 have either taken early retirement or are in education.
