We human beings like to categorise things. It’s a good way of keeping order in the mental filing cabinet, but as a result many things have become separated that really belong together.
Take the various 'people problems' of engagement, retention, performance, sickness and so on. These will have overlapping causes in a workplace - maybe even the same cause - so there often just different manifestations of the same thing. Yet we have them filed under different names, and so tend to think of them as being separate things.
To add to the confusion, there are many initiatives employed to help people be happier at work, from free fruit to mindfulness sessions. All these initiatives are trying to achieve the same thing, but how do you actually know which of them are doing what, and for whom?
WeThrive has produced a new white paper with an 8-point, practical plan for HR executives who want to bring clarity to this area. It brings stress, engagement, mental health at work and wellbeing together, gets beneath the names to the underlying problems, and so makes it easier to find the right solutions for the right people.
The plan begins by looking at the underlying psychological needs of the individual, as seen in the business context, because if you can see where these are not being met, all the surface phenomena like engagement - or lack of it - suddenly make sense.
