Candidate left 'humiliated' & 'hurt' following ageist job interview question

Westminster Council has been accused of ageism, suggesting a 59-year-old woman should ‘retire or go travelling’ during a job interview.

The comment was made by a manager in the Local Land Charges Department of the council – The Evening Standard reports. The manager interviewing allegedly asked the candidate: “Do you not think you should be retiring and go travelling?”

The interviewee, who asked not to be named, was so shocked that she complained to the council’s chief executive. The council are now investigating the incident and apologised “unreservedly for the upset and distress caused.”

In an interview with the Standard, the jobseeker explained that she felt “humiliated,” and she did not get the job.
