Sports Direct warehouse staff to receive back pay worth £1m

Workers at Sports Direct’s warehouse are set to receive back pay worth up to £1million – The Guardian reports.

Last month Mike Ashley, Founder and Deputy Chairman of Sports Direct, admitted to MPs that staff were paid below minimum wage as security checks on those leaving their Shirebrook, Derbyshire warehouse created a bottleneck.

The agreement is understood to have been made between the union Unite and HM Revenue & Customs. The deal will include those who are employed directly by Sports Direct and those who are employed via temporary firms such as The Best Connection and Transline, who provide the bulk of the staff who work at the retailer's Shirebrook, Derbyshire warehouse.

The payments are expected to start at the end of the month.
