Female sailor denied job & told she would 'be better off on a cruise ship'

A female candidate looking to launch her career on the high seas claims she was told by an interviewer she would be “better off working on a cruise ship.”

Qualified Deck Officer Sophia Walker has accused shipping firm Wallem Ship Management of sexism, after she applied for a job as a deck hand with the company.

Walker insists that an email which was sent to her tutor at Lancashire’s Fleetwood Nautical Campus proves that she wasn’t offered the role because of her gender - as ten males were asked back for interviews.

The email reads: “Wallem is an equal opportunity company but we WILL not offer places for the female cadets [deck officers] because we can’t offer the appropriate on-board environment to make it work.
