While there is no maximum statutory workplace temperature, there have been calls for it to be pegged at 30°C, or 27°C for those doing physical activity, by the TUC (UK Trade Union Centre) – The Independent reports.
One reason for the lack of upper limit is, according to the Health and Safety Executive (as reported by The Telegraph), the high temperatures found in glass works or foundries, for example.
The TUC also says that employers should be obliged to begin taking measures to cool the workplace down if the temperature is above 24°C.
To cope with current conditions, they advise that dress codes asking for ties and jackets to be worn should be relaxed in favour of short sleeves and shorts to be worn at work.
