The issue of gender-based double standards in the workplace is not a new one; however the issue of how women dress for work has recently made headlines.
Temp worker Nicola Thorp was recently sent home from her first day of work as a receptionist at PwC for wearing flat shoes instead of heels, which went against her recruitment agency Portico’s dress code.
She has since launched a petition with Parliament to make such dress codes illegal, and both Portico and PwC have pledged to avoid them in the future.
However, the story shone a spotlight on the issue of how women are required to look at work, with The Guardian compiling a list of stories from women faced with the prospect of their looks being judged in the workplace.
