5 rules for becoming an expert explainer

Collectively, according to Deloitte, people in the UK now look at their smartphones over a billion times a day. It’s fair to say we are a distracted society.

So as the smartphone screen and other forms of new technology divert our attentions, as content providers, educators and managers, we must now find new ways of adapting to this distracted audience behaviour.

One way to do this is by ensuring your message is simple and quick.

At simpleshow, we follow 5 simple rules. Doing this allows us to create original, engaging messages that really cut through the noise and hold an audience’s attention.

1. Change your perspective

You might be an expert, but your audience probably isn’t. So change your angle of attack and really think about what’s in it for them.

2. Cut out the clutter

Focus on the “Why” and not the “What” or the “How”. This way, you can build a causal framework for an explanation without having to confuse the audience with unnecessary information.

3. Tell a story

Harnessing the power of a well-told story is one of the best ways to hook your audience and really get them engaged.

4. Paint a picture

A metaphoric image allows you to contextualise your point and really make it stick. And you don’t have to be an award-winning artist to make this work!

5. Build confidence

If you’ve successfully shifted your perspective, cut out the clutter and told a good story using abstract imagery, chances are you’ve explained your topic well and built confidence in your audience.
